The Tulip Week 2017
“The Tulip Week” at Villa Taranto
From 9th to 25th April
As per tradition, from 9th to 25th April, the event “The Tulip Week” will take place at the Villa Taranto. Thousands of bulbs will cover the flowerbeds and fields, giving the visitors a fairytale panorama.
This event was inaugurated for the first time by Captain Neil Mc Eacharn in 1956.
During this period, the botanical garden is painted in colour thanks to the over 80.000 bulbs, each unique and in bloom, among which the tulips undoubtedly stand out.
The tulip is a flower rich in history and significations. Its name most likely comes from the word “tullband”, which in Turkish means “Turban” for its peculiar form. In the language of flowers, depending on colour, the tulip has different significations: the red tulip, for example, is a declaration of love, while the yellow tulip symbolizes love with no hope.
The main attraction is the Labyrinth of Tulips, which mesmerises the visitors with its magical colors. A long path of circa 400 meters allows the visitors to take a walk and admire the bulbs of 65 tulip varieties.
During this period, in addition, it will be possible to admire a generous blossoming of camellias, magnolias, rhododendrons, daffodils, violets and a chromatic blue carpet with over 40.000 blooming grape hyacinths.
Some tulips stand out for their eye-catching characteristics, for example:
The “Carnival de Nice” tulips, which are white with a dark red border;
The delightful “Micky Mouse”, which are yellow with red streaks;
The” Giant Orange Sunset”, the biggest tulip of the varieties planted;
The polished black tulip “Queen of night” and the fringed “Flaming Baltic”, with white petals decorated with a flame of intense burgundy;
To finish the tour it’s impossible to miss the particular contrast created by the “Black & White” section on the terraced part of the garden.
