Stresa Festival 2016
International Music Festival on Lago Maggiore
From 19 July to 6 September 2016
The Stresa Festival has determined the soundtrack of the summer on Lake Maggiore for over half a century. For its 55th edition it is divided into three destinct parts;
Midsummer Jazz Concerts – 19-24 July 2016
The main venue for the Midsummer Jazz Concerts is the La Palazzola on the Stresa lakefront, an open air location with magnificent views of the ornate terraces of the Isola Bella. The first two concerts however will take place in the band new arena Il Maggiore in Verbania.
The evening of 19 July marks the official opening of the festival with the concert Amore che vieni, amore che vai – a tribute to Italian singer-songwriter Fabrizio de André at Il Maggiore.
Wednesday 20 July it’s time for “Voice n’ bass” duo Petra Magoni and Ferruccio Spinetti and their perfomance entitled Musica Nuda, also in the arena Il Maggiore.
Thursday 21 July the event will move to Stresa and La Palazzola. The renowned Kenny Barron Trio opens the season in Stresa with a jazz concert of international level.
Another trio is scheduled for Friday 22 July which DeJohnette, Coltrane & Garrison take the stage in Stresa.
To complete the series of trios on 23 July is the Carla Bley “Trios”.
The last evening of the midsummer concerts, the 24 July, will be divided in two parts. Leading lady Roberta Gambarini kicks off the evening the her enchanting voice then makes way for the trumpet of the Roy Hargrove Quintet.
Musical Meditation – 26-28 July 2016
The sessions of Musical Meditation will be divided between the Hermitage Santa Caterina del Sasso on the Lombard side of Lake Maggiore and the Old Church of Belgirate on the Piedmont side.
On 26 July we start off with three suites by Johann Sebastian Bach interpreted by cellist Enrico Bronzi in the evocative framework of the Hermitage Santa Caterina.
On 27 July Enrico Bronzi continues with the second part of the Bach suites.
On the evening of 28 July the Quartet Noûs takes us on a journey from Vienna-Parigi in the Old Church of di Belgirate.
Building Bridges – 23 August to 6 September
The main part of the Stresa Festival 2016 is entitled Building Bridges and will begin on 23 August with the two pianos of the Labèque sisters and end on 6 September with the spectacular London Symphony Orchestra directed by Maestro Gianandrea Noseda, artistic director of the festival.
This part of the festival will take place in some of the most facinating locations on Lake Maggiore, including The Borromeo Palace on Isola Bella, the Loggia del Cashmere on Isola Madre, the Rocca d’Angera and the Church of the Collegio Rosmini in Stresa. Among the leading acts of this concert season are:
25 August: Mare Nostrum - Spiritual Muslim, Jewish and Christian music of the Mediterranean
27 August: Oltre la porta - A tribute to William Shakespeare
31 August: The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra directed by Yannick Nézet-Séguin
5 September: Pianist Seong-Jin Cho, winner of the Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw 2015
Building Bridges is a collection of 15 concerts which will light up the summer nights of 2016 and, in return, will be enhanced by the extraordinaly scenery of Lake Maggiore.
